Paladins of Death
The undead have been in Puebla, Mexico, since the time of the conquistadores. More than even what became the United States, the Sabbat saw potential in seizing control of the New World from Mexico. The Lasombra and their best warriors joined Cortés and other Spanish conquerors and helped capture vast swaths of land. As cities were built, the Cainites took refuge from the withering but ever-dwindling assaults of Lupines and angry ghosts. Surrounded by a population enthralled to do their bidding, the Sabbat grew strong. All rivals found cities like Puebla unassailable: true strongholds of the Hand of Caine in the New World. With the local indigenous populations properly beaten down, the Sabbat turned their attention to expansion to all of the Americas.
But things change. Those native peoples and their guardians and scions were not exterminated. Better for the Sabbat if they had been, because now they regroup and are poised to soon strike and bring the vile conquerors to their knees.
Special Events
Special events are annual (or more frequent) holidays or special ritual days that the main group or groups observe as a whole community. Attendance and participation are often expected of all members, and sometimes required.
Fiesta de los Extintos
The Sabbat in Puebla observe, with a certain perverse relish, all the major auctoritas ritae of the sect. Of course, Vaulderie is most important. But a favorite in Puebla is what in the Old World (the Italian Lasombra) called “Festivo dello Estinto”—Festival of the Extinct. At first glance, this might sound like a variation of the Dia de Muertos common in Mexico (celebrated after All Saints’ Day, November 2nd). On the contrary, it is a perversion of Carnival, that pre-Lent week-long celebration. Whereas Carnival is meant for the people to enjoy themselves before entering a period of reverent fasting and restraint in order to honor the rebirth of Christ, the Sabbat takes the opportunity to mock the dead. They mock the dead because the dead are losers. So, like Carnival, Sabbat dress up in fantastical costumes and join in the revelry. Their idea of it, however, tends to involve a great deal of murder. Blood Feasts reign every night.
“There is much afoot in the City of Angels. Our enemies are very quaint, even beautiful—proudly clothed in a mantle of righteous error. Remedy their error, soldiers of Caine.”
-- César Montreal de Aguila, 7th-Generacion Arzobispo de la Diócesis de los Angeles de los Campos Negros
