Rank & Renown
Though the Nuwisha follow a system of recognition similar to the Garou, they aren't exactly like the Garou. Indeed, their own views of Renown are quite different.
Laughing for the Right Reasons: Renown
Ferocity
Nuwisha do not follow the berserker path of the Garou. Hit'n'run tactics, stealth approaches, and clever ambushes are recognized before toe-to-toe bloodfests. Even servants of Loki know better than to charge right in. The ferocious Coyote does not slaughter every foe in sight. The ferocious Coyote defeats his enemies and makes sure they learn what they did wrong. The ferocious Coyote puts the self-righteous on their asses. The ferocious Coyote dances and laughs circles around his enemies.
- The Hunter's Creed
I will laugh at the proud.
I will slay only the Worm.
I will teach the weak
so they will be strong.
Humor
Nuwisha hold honor as a highly personal thing. Among each other, Coyote's Children instead compare levels of Humor. An entertaining Coyote isn't a clown and goofball. The Nuwisha must trick those who need to learn a lesson and prank those who need to learn a lesson in death. While Cunning covers tricks and Ferocity concerns pranks, Humor gages just how amusing either sort of joke was. If the deed was worth retelling and made the listeners laugh, it was worthy of Humorous recognition. If "you just had to be there", it probably wasn't worth any Renown!
- The Law of Laughter
I will laugh at the foolish.
I will laugh at the damned.
I will laugh at myself
and never forget my place.
Cunning
Nuwisha tend to hold Cunning closer to heart than Ferocity. Cunning for Nuwisha combines elements of the Garou, Corax, and Bastet codes. The Coyotes yearn for knowledge and secrets. However, they are also deeply concerned with the spiritual care of their environment: namely, the Umbra. Most of all, the Nuwisha are teachers. Though their medium is humor and the subject is usually humility, those they trick or fool or tease are their students. There are lessons to learn in their madness. The Cunning Nuwisha can get the point across without being too blunt...or too obnoxious.
- The Code of Cunning
I will seek knowledge and wisdom.
I will teach my siblings how to laugh.
I will look past the Web
and breathe the Stars.
Honoring Luna: Rank
In general, Nuwisha gain and lose Rank and Renown the same way Garou do. The Renown chart given in the Werewolf corebook can be utilized for most facets of Coyote life. Ferocity replaces Glory, Humor replaces Honor, and Cunning in place of Wisdom. Nuwisha require permanent Renown gain only in permanent points, no specific categories (they are like Ragabash in this regards). There are a few differences from Garou, however.
- Nuwisha occasionally gather, but are largely loners. To gain permanent Renown, they must learn and perform a Rite of Recognition when they have ten temporary points in a Renown category. The spirits carry word of their virtue afar; if a Nuwisha is lying, the spirits will know...
- Nuwisha cannot renounce their Renown; as they don’t have Auspices, it’s pointless.
The sections of the Renown chart found in the Werewolf corebook (pages 190-193) that are most relevant to the Nuwisha are listed here, with noted distinctions.
- Combat & Encounters
Nuwisha who kill or fatally prank any other shapeshifter who is not Wyrm-tainted lose lots of Renown. A Get of Fenris may be obnoxiously chauvinistic, but he doesn't deserve to die for it. Just trick him. A lot. And if a Nuwisha can manage to knock said Fenrir on his ass over and over and live to tell about it, that's Ferocity!
- Mystical
Umbra-related tasks are most emphasized among Nuwisha.
- Caern Activities
The Nuwisha hold onto few caerns for themselves. Most are shared with Wendigo and Uktena -- or were simply lost to the Wyrmcomers. A Coyote who performs some great duty -- or breach of trust -- regarding a caern stands to gain or lose plenty of Renown.
- Garou Relations and Society
Nuwisha relations and society, rather -- most of these categories can apply.
- Behavior
The Nuwisha are not nearly as passive-aggressive as Garou. Werewolves seek to maintain a sense of stoicism between frenzies. Nuwisha don't frenzy (usually). But they are expected to conduct themselves with decency, especially among each other.
- Human and Kinfolk Relations
The Nuwisha are all for the Veil, especially since their war-form doesn't inspire quite as maddening a Delirium in humans as Garou do. Furthermore, Coyotes love their Kin lots and lots. And they have plenty all around the world.
