Terms of the Hengeyokai


  • Age of the Dawning: The First Age of the Great Cycle, according to the hengeyokai.
  • Age of Legends: The Third Age of the Great Cycle.
  • Age of Shadows: The Fifth Age or modern era, believed to have been heralded by the arrival of the Westerners.
  • Age of Sorrow: The Sixth Age, the age yet to come - the Apocalypse for the hengeyokai.
  • Age of the Ten Thousand Things: The Second Age of the Great Cycle, according to the hengeyokai.
  • Age of Testing: The Fourth Age of the Great Cycle, according to the hengeyokai.
  • Banfa (bahn-FAH): The Camazotz of the East, slain in the War of Shame.
  • Beast-Courts: The Court organizations of the hengeyokai, corresponding to Western septs.
  • Centipede, The: Slang for the Wyrm or Yomi incarnate. “Centipedes” sometimes refers to Wyrm-beasts, probably because of certain demons’ tendency to appear like giant insects.
  • Court of Ancestors: The collective society of the hengeyokai Ancestor-spirits.
  • Emerald Mother, The: Gaia.
  • Fist: The auspice of the warrior, corresponding to the Ahroun.
  • Gai’nan (gah-EE-NAHN): A term that roughly translates into “magistrate” - a ranking hengeyokai Court official.
  • High War: The formal, courtly ways of making war, such as honorable combat.
  • Lantern: The auspice of leadership and judgment, roughly equivalent to Philodox.
  • Leaf: The auspice of stealth and information-gathering, corresponding to the Ragabash.
  • Low War: Less honorable forms of making war; pacts with Kuei-jin are considered the province of Low War.
  • Minister of Heaven: A polite form of address for an Eastern Incarna spirit (save for Wyrm Incarna, who are called Ministers of Hell).
  • Mirror: The auspice of mediation and mysticism; rough equivalent to Theurge.
  • Mountain Sentai: A war party bound by a common totem and common code of conduct; roughly equivalent to a Garou pack.
  • Okuma (oh-KOO-mah): The Gurahl of the East, slain in the War of Shame.
  • Pillar: The auspice of support and unity -- very rough equivalent to Galliard.
  • Sentai: A hengeyokai war party, typically five in number, or bound to a common totem as in a Garou pack.
  • Sunset People, The: The Western shapeshifters, the term a reference to their fatalism concerning the coming Age.
  • Talon: An elemental role within a sentai, such as “Fire Talon” or “Moon Talon”.
  • Tsuki-yomi (soo-KEE-yoh-MEE): Another name for Luna.
  • War of Shame: A great war like the War of Rage, fought among hengeyokai Beast-Courts during the Fourth Age, instigated by Wan Kuei machination.
  • Wave Sentai: A temporary sentai, arranged from convenience and necessity more than anything else.
  • Wind: A sentai member’s directional alignment with one of the cardinal directions, such as “Center Wind” or “South Wind”.
