Materialization vs. Rising

There are several differences between just Embodying and re-inhabiting one's own body and becoming one of the Walking Dead. The differences include different advantages and disadvantages, as well as limitations, some of which are listed below.

  • The Risen Dead are much more physically durable than Embodied wraiths.
  • The Risen have access to two new Arcanoi only they can use.
  • The Risen have no real duration to remain in the Skinlands. They stay until they are destroyed, succumb to their Shadows, or choose to vacate their body and return to the Shadowlands.

  • Embodied wraiths, especially when Materialized, are a lot more pleasant to the touch, smell, and sight than the Walking Dead, who often look as corpse-like as they really are.
  • Embodied wraiths still have access to most of their Arcanoi, such as Outrage, and at no special price or danger.
  • Embodied wraiths can carry over relics and artifacts, allowing potential use of magical items and weapons while in the Skinlands.

  • Though higher in Pathos maintenance costs (at least at first glance), Embody allows greater flexibility. When threatened on either side of the Shroud, a wraith can often "escape" his danger (at least temporarily). The Risen must run away like normal Skinlanders...although since most Risen can take as much physical punishment as an Abrams tank, flight isn't often the first instinct.
  • If tasting life again is the way to Transcendence, then Risen Dead seem much more likely to qualify than most Proctors.
